Below is the breakdown of AHEM dues for 2007-08. All figures are based on employment for the full calendar period Sept. 1, 2007, through Aug. 31, 2008. Dues are deducted over 16 pay periods beginning with the
Oct. 5, 2007, paycheck. Dues paying members: If you requested the $10 PAC and/or $5 Education Minnesota Foundation refund, you must subtract that amount from your total dues. For federal income tax purposes, dues payments (or a portion) may be deductible as a miscellaneous itemized deduction to the extent allowed by law. It is very important to save your last payroll stub in December for the exact amount of dues paid in the YTD column.

Tax Time: Don’t forget the deduction of $250 for classroom expenses. Teachers can deduct cost of books, supplies, computer software and equipment, and other materials used in the classroom. Look for the deduction “Educator expenses” on your federal 1040 form. It is not necessary to itemize expenses, but a record of expenses should be kept.
